February 2000 AutoInc. Cover
An American Classic success story, the Corvette has continued to hold its market share
and investment value since its introduction in 1953. Arriving just in time to make use of
Chevy's new V-8 introduced in 1955, it went from a docile sports car to a tire-smoking
monster. This 1967 model is owned by Bill Weltyk, and is a continuation of the Sting Ray
design introduced by Bill Mitchell with the 1963 models. Only minor trim changes took place
each year, with the major items such as headlights, a giant gas fill cap in the middle
of the trunk, and heavy rocker panel trim being on each year's offering. Mitchell's Vette
has the 327-cubic-inch engine, rated at 300 horsepower, a four-speed manual transmission;
an AM/FM radop; and a Posi-traction rear end. It has been refinished using DuPont acrylic
"Rally Red" paint.
