Rick O'Brien, technician and part owner of McKenney's Service Center, a NAPA AutoCare Center in South Portland, Maine, has been named the NAPA/ASE Technician of the Year by NAPA and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) for 1995.Designed to enhance the caliber of technicians and raise awareness of the importance of ASE certification, the award carries a prize package valued at nearly $25,000. O'Brien, an ASE-certified master technician with L1 certification, was selected for the prestigious award by a panel of trade press editors, the president of ASE and former recipients of the award.
According to NAPA, O'Brien was selected based on his technical skills, business practices, effective merchandising and sales promotions, dedication to education, and commitment to the industry and community activities.
Among the many reasons O'Brien received the honor is his concern for the image of the repair profession. O'Brien, a member of the Automotive Service Association (ASA) and an Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM), says the profession's image is improving.
"Although progress has been slow, increasingly, people are recognizing the level of skill and intelligence needed to repair their $30,000, $40,000 and $50,000 vehicles," said O'Brien.
