Missouri Member Gets Environmental Award
Juel Clevenger, AAM, president of Delta Lube and Tune-Up of Lee's Summit, Mo., has received an award for his comprehensive recycling program.

"I feel very honored to receive this award. However, more importantly, I hope other ASA shops get involved with saving our earth and do their part in recycling."

In 1981, before many shop owners were thinking about environmental issues, Clevenger began accepting used oil from the public and has since added oil filters and auto batteries to the list of materials collected and recycled by Delta. Several years ago, Clevenger designed and manufactured a low-cost oil filter cutting device to separate oil filter elements from their steel castings. He uses this machine to generate high-quality steel for local recyclers. Delta also recycles refrigerant from automotive air conditioners, automotive coolant and scrap metal components from automotive repair.

Clevenger has been involved in Kansas City's oil collection program and Delta serves as a state-certified collection facility. Also, Delta personnel advise the local fire department and landfill operator on the handling and disposal of contaminated used oil.

The award was presented to Clevenger by the Convenient Automotive Services Institute (CASI) for extraordinary effort to further the fast lube industry's environmental goals.

Service Market Gains Product Share
The service market is capturing a growing percentage of car and light truck aftermarket product sales, while the "do-it-yourself" share of aftermarket product volume has steadily declined, reports James A. Lang, president of Lang Marketing Resources. The service market product share was 67.1 percent in 1985, growing to 72 percent by 1995. Due to consumer demographics, changing vehicle designs and an increasing share of import vehicles on U.S. roads, Lang predicts an increase in service market share to 75 percent by the year 2000.
