Saying Thanks for A Great Year!

Posted 12/16/1998
By Carl Miller, AAM

Portrait of Carl Miller Here we are at the last month of 1998 and the end of the year is coming fast. Looking back to January and the new year's business goals, how close are we to reaching those goals? This will be the month to finish this year's programs, hoping to reach your goals.

An important factor in achieving this year's production goals has been our employees. In my case, my manager and shop personnel have kept the shop running smoothly during the times that I have been gone. With the Christmas season approaching, I have to take the time to tell my employees how much they mean to me. The question is: How do I really express my gratitude for these hard-working individuals? Sometimes I think we should have an employee appreciation week or even a month.

December is a good time to show our employees that they really matter. It always amazes me what a pat on the back, a dinner out, a thank-you card, and yes, a cash bonus, will do to improve the production in our shop. In the past I have worked for firms that gave nothing and almost ignored the holidays. I have also worked for others that made the holiday season important. As an employee, it was easier to go the extra mile for the employer that did acknowledge the importance of the holiday for my family. Even a small gift of appreciation for service rendered was really great. With this in mind, I choose to treat my employees like I wanted to be treated. We make special arrangements, if needed, for our employees to plan for their family times during the holidays. Our Christmas party for employees has been a time to come together and have fun. Even the little kids in our families seem to enjoy the time together. The results from this seem to be an increase in production and a feeling of belonging for our employees.

As the Christmas season approaches, maybe it's time to think about what we can do to thank those who help us reach those business goals. I would be remiss if I didn't thank our fine ASA staff who have worked hard this year to help me. I have to thank the many volunteers who make this association work. But you as members that support the efforts of ASA are the very reason for ASA and we appreciate the continued support.

May you all have a great holiday season as we remember the reason for this season. Here's looking forward to an even greater year in 1999.
