Sunrise 2000 proves informative for attendees
B.J. FrankASA-Arizona held its Sunrise 2000 conference and trade show Oct. 10-12 in Casa Grande, Ariz. The program offered attendees Automotive Management Institute (AMI) seminars taught by Dave Doremus and earned participants credits toward the Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation.

Joe Cross, Tucson Cylinder Head Service, opened the annual event by presenting the golf tournament awards and welcoming attendees. Attendees also enjoyed an informal question-and-answer session on diagnostic problems and a seminar on the future for automotive businesses presented by Snap-on.

Members who achieved Gold Medallion recognition were also honored. The Gold Medallion program acknowledges member businesses that meet ASA-Arizona's established standards of a professional automotive business. Mark Salem, Salem Boys Auto, provided an informative session on how to handle the media. The program, "What do you do when 20/20 shoves a microphone in your face?" taught members how to respond, instead of react, to the media in a professional manner. Conference attendees also had the opportunity to meet with 16 vendors during the trade show. Trade show exhibitors demonstrated the latest technology in products and service. The three-day event ended with B.J. Frank, (pictured above) ASA affiliate liaison, speaking to ASA-Arizona members about new member benefits offered by the national office.

ASA-Minnesota holds annual "Lights On for Safety"
The third annual ASA-Minnesota "Lights On for Safety" was held Oct. 4 at six locations throughout the state. ASA members, technicians, and automotive technical students conducted free inspections and replacements of exterior vehicle light bulbs and headlamps. The affiliate collected cash and food donations to support community food banks at each location.

Volunteers serviced 250 vehicles and collected more than $750 and 850 pounds of food for the food banks. Even though the public turnout was lower than anticipated, ASA-Minnesota and the volunteers enjoyed themselves, made solid customer contacts and considered the event worthwhile and rewarding. The primary objectives of "Lights On for Safety" are to raise awareness and improve the image of the automotive service industry; provide an opportunity for all sectors of the industry to interact and work together toward a common purpose; improve vehicle safety; and help alleviate hunger in the communities.

ASA business honored for pollution prevention

Martin Duran, owner of Duran's Body Shop in East Los Angeles, was named a community role model for his actions in protecting the environment. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works and the California Environmental Protection Agency's Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) honored local businesses for consistent use of "good housekeeping" techniques to prevent chemicals such as oil and grease from entering the storm drain system. Duran received the award during a special workshop on pollution prevention held at the Los Angeles Urban League/Toyota Automotive Training Center on Oct. 29.

Duran's Body Shop incorporates pollution prevention practices in its everyday routine, such as employee training; covering and paving fueling and storage areas; and regularly sweeping rather than hosing down the ground. Duran's Body Shop has been an ASA member since 1990.
