Louisiana Warns Shops About Hurricane-Damaged Vehicles

Posted 12/13/2005
By Karin White

Technicians, collision repairers and detail shops should be on the alert for vehicles coming from the New Orleans area.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality estimates 350,000 vehicles will need to be recycled as a result of the devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina. The damaged vehicles will be brought into storage where they will be tagged and inventoried by license plate, make, model, color and vehicle identification number (VIN).

Storage operators will forward vehicle data to the Louisiana Department of Insurance for dissemination to insurers. The state police and the National Insurance Crime Bureau will also inspect the vehicles.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau has created a database to track affected vehicles to curb the reselling of flooded vehicles. The information will be distributed to public officials, insurance companies and departments of motor vehicles across the country.
