Tip for Shopping Safely Online

December is one of the busiest months for online shopping. More people are avoiding the crowded malls and streets to shop for their holiday gifts from the comfort of their own homes. Follow these tips to keep your online shopping experience safe.

  1. Security is key to online shopping. Make sure you shop with companies you trust. Be sure to research the company's refund and return policies before you place an order.
  2. Be creative when establishing a password. Avoid using telephone numbers, birth dates, or a portion of your social security number. Try to use a combination of letters and numbers.
  3. For your peace of mind, know that if you pay by credit card, your transaction will be protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act. Under this law, consumers have the right to dispute charges and temporarily withhold payment while an investigation ensues. However, make sure you are on a secure page before submitting any information. Look for a Web address that begins with https://.
  4. Look for a reliability seal on the merchant's Web site. Sites that use VeriSign, e-Trust or are recognized by the Better Business Bureau are safe for purchasing goods and services online.
  5. Be cautious of Internet scams. If a company uses claims of limited availability, be careful of purchasing. Any legitimate company will give you time to make a decision.
  6. Make sure you allow enough time for delivery. Federal law requires that products be delivered within 30 days, unless a different delivery period is stated by the merchant. Don't wait too long to order or you might find yourself amidst the last-minute crowds at malls.

Having a shopping mall available to you with the click of a button is making hectic holiday shopping easier. Knowing your rights as an Internet consumer will make the online shopping experience better and more convenient for you this holiday season.
