Specialty Equipment Market Shows GrowthPosted 12/13/2000By Denise Caspersen
With Industry Week 2000 complete in Las Vegas, a glance at the $23.24 billion specialty equipment market seems appropriate. According to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), 1999 manufacturer sales totaled $8.17 billion, which turned into retail sales of $23.24 billion with an average annual growth rate of 9.5 percent. Segmenting the market produces an informative look at specialty equipment. Accessories and appearance products compose the largest manufacturer segment at $4.44 billion (54.3 percent). These are dress-up and creature comfort items. Racing and performance products racked up $1.73 billion in manufacturer dollars (21.2 percent). SEMA defines these as the performance-enhancing parts such as cams, pistons, carburetors, distributors, fuel injectors, headers, spark plugs, drive shafts and mufflers. Wheels, tires and suspension products spin in at $2 billion in manufacturer dollars (24 percent). This segment includes performance shocks, struts, lowering packages, lift kits, wheels, specialty or higher performance tires and brakes with increased rating. All three segments are markets that ASA collision and mechanical repair facilities can and do offer to their customer base.
