ASA Praises ARA for Initiating Study
With news that a study the Automotive Service Association (ASA) has long requested is in work comes words of praise from ASA. The study, on salvage parts usage, is being conducted by the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA).Sharon Merwin, manager of ASA's Collision Division, said ASA is pleased that ARA is proceeding with the study and said ASA will continue to offer input.
ASA has been working with ARA for the past five years, offering progressive ideas that would improve the coordination and use of salvage parts. The two associations have also sought solutions that would allow for a mutually beneficial and seamless integration of the proposed National Salvage Title bill.
DOT Auto Safety Hotline
Vehicle owners that suspect a safety-related defect in their vehicles can report the problem to the hotline at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). The DOT Auto Safety Hotline specializes in gathering information about safety problems in motor vehicles and equipment.The hotline contains information about motor vehicle safety, child safety seats, vehicle safety defects, importation and certification, and air bags.
Safety defects can also be reported online at www.nhtsa.dot.gov/hotline.
DuPont Closes Spies Hecker Site
The Spies Hecker site in Farmingdale, N.Y., will be closed by November and most functions will be relocated to Plymouth, Mich.Doug Moore, vice president of DuPont Refinish Americas, said that the warehousing operation and training center will be integrated into other DuPont Perform-ance Coatings locations. Employees at the Farming-dale location will be considered for opportunities at other DuPont Performance Coatings locations, Moore added. He emphasized that the move will have no effect on customers.
Free Video Training on Web Site
Free video training from Toyota and Meritor are now available at the Service Technician Society (STS) Web site ( www.sts.sae.org). STS has added the latest streaming video features to its site to provide technicians a convenient and cost-effective way to get the latest training information from leading vehicle and component manufacturers.The manufacturer-produced videos, which range from 10 to 15 minutes, are unedited and digitized in their entirety. Training topics from Toyota include Electronics Modules I and II, Fuel Systems Checks, Sensors and Their Circuits, and Axle Disassembly and Reassembly.
Sherwin-Williams to Build Technical and Learning Facility
Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes Corp. has announced plans to build a new technical and learning facility in northeast Ohio.The facility will include an applications center equipped to replicate virtually any refinish environment - from various climates and airflow conditions to robotics applications - allowing the staff to react to any refinish and OEM customer's request.
The new learning center will offer all product, color and management courses available in the Sherwin-Williams training curriculum.
ADP Donates Hardware to Vocational Schools
ADP Claims Solutions Group (CSG) has donated thousands of dollars worth of computer hardware to two Florida vocational schools. 20 laptop computers and 20 printers were donated to Sheridan Vocational Tech-nical Center in Hollywood, Fla., and 16 printers were given to the Frank H. Petersen Skill Center in Jacksonville, Fla. Both schools provide training in essential skills for people interested in careers in the collision repair business.California Autobody Expo '99
The California Autobody Association (CAA) will host Autobody Expo '99, Sept. 10-12, 1999, at the Ontario Convention Center located in Ontario, California.This year's attendees will be able to view the latest technology, equipment, materials, training and services. Free seminars will cover such topics as frame damage diagnosis and analysis, tram gauge reading, industry usage of the Internet, used parts in collision repair, spray booth hygiene, detailing, and estimating.
