By B.J. Johnson ASA member receives U.S. Chamber of Commerce Award
Jerry Kezhaya, owner of The Auto Shop in Plano, Texas, has won the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Blue Chip Enterprise Award for the state of Texas. The award is co-sponsored by Massachusetts Mutual.The Auto Shop has been serving the Dallas area since 1980 and has been an ASA member since 1987.
ASA-Oregon members receive substantial dividend
More than 250 participants in the ASA-Oregon workers' compensation group program with SAIF Corp. will share in a $75 million dividend recently declared by SAIF. ASA-Oregon members will share in a total of $733,378 to be distributed among the individual participants with checks ranging from $13 to $36,196.The dividend is payable to an estimated 32,000 eligible Oregon employers, both public and private. The dividend represents the 15th time in 11 years that SAIF has returned money to its policyholders. Total dividends paid by SAIF since 1990 now exceed $650 million.
ASA executive committee attends ASA-Phoenix meeting
The ASA national executive committee attended the June 15 ASA-Phoenix chapter meeting. The meeting provided chapter members an opportunity to meet the leadership of ASA and discuss the future of the association.The five-member executive committee is comprised of Howard Lewis, AAM, chairman; Jim Keller, AAM, chairman-elect; Dan Frohlich, AAM, secretary/treasurer; Johnny Mock, AAM, immediate past chairman; and Kevin Caldwell, AAM, collision division director. Walter Trapp, president of ASA, is an ex officio member of the committee and also attended the meeting.
Bruce McLaughlin, ASA-Phoenix chapter development director, also provided members with a report of his activities regarding membership recruitment and retention.
NACE expands educational program
The International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) has increased the number of Congress seminars for the 2000 event. Attendees will have the option of purchasing a Full Congress Package or individual tickets to Congress seminars, and for the first time, these seminars will begin on Thursday morning, Dec. 7.
These additions will give attendees more choices, as well as more flexibility, as they develop their NACE itinerary. By offering seminars Thursday morning, we are freeing up more time for attendees to visit the NACE Exposition, which starts the following day, said Dana Bellantone, NACE show director.
More than 40 Congress seminars will be offered. The new topics for NACE 2000 include 21st Century trends, e-business, Internet resources, managing margins, successful negotiating, detailing, paint contamination, aftermarket parts, advanced electrical diagnosis and claims handling. Other topics include direct repair programs (DRPs), consolidation, adhesive bonding, successful staffing, estimating, recycled parts, air bags, cycle time, women in the industry, spraybooths and compressed air contamination.
Optional education for NACE 2000 will be provided by the Automotive Management Institute (AMI), the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR), the Paint, Body and Equipment Association (PBEA), the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) and the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). Seminars sponsored by these organizations will focus on a range of management and technical subjects. All optional education seminars will be individually priced.
NACE 2000 will be held December 7-10 at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Fla., and is expected to attract more than 30,000 collision repair professionals worldwide.
NATIONAL NEWS
Each year during the ASA Annual Convention, ASA recognizes the largest affiliate delegation attending. This year will be no exception. The ASA affiliate with the largest delegation attending will receive a hosted reception in the Chairman's suite in their honor.
The 2001 ASA Annual Convention will be held April 23-28 at the Westin Hotel in Maui, Hawaii. Affiliates are encouraged to begin promoting the award to its members. The ASA-Illinois Mechanical Division affiliate won the award at the 2000 ASA Annual Convention in Point Clear, Ala.
Convention registration and housing information will be mailed to all ASA members in October. The 2001 convention marks ASA's 50th anniversary and special activities have been planned to celebrate this milestone.
Daniel Burrus, one of the world's leading technology forecasters, will officially open the International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) on Friday morning, Dec. 8, with a dynamic keynote presentation about technology tools that have proven to increase productivity and efficiency in collision repair businesses.
Brian P. Sullivan, founder and editor of Auto Insurance Report and Property Insurance Report newsletters, will deliver the Saturday, Dec. 9, keynote address on the evolution of the collision repair and insurance industries, and changes to anticipate in both industries during the next 10 years.
NACE will be held Dec. 7-10, at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Fla. AutoInc. will once again publish the Official NACE Online Daily during the show.
Reminder of the Month
The Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) will be held Nov. 2-4 at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas.
During the three-day event, the Automotive Management Institute (AMI) will offer three courses: Elephant Chains and Turn Your Employees into Superstars, presented by Bob Cooper; and Technician Time Management, taught by Bob O'Connor. The two seminars Cooper is presenting will earn attendees six credits per course and the O'Connor seminar will earn attendees 12 credits. Credits are applied toward the institute's Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation.
In addition to management seminars, CARS will provide eight top-notch technical courses. Returning from successful engagements at CARS '99 will be Jim Linder, Linder Technical Services, providing a new three-hour course titled Broke Cars 101; Mark Warren, Warren Automotive Training, with a new course on Waveform Analysis; and Jim Newkirk, IDENTIFIX, presenting a three-hour course on Honda/Toyota Drivability Diagnosis and Troubleshooting.
New speakers and courses for CARS will include John Meade, General Motors Corp., presenting a three-hour course on GM OBD II Systems; Dr. Normal Nall, CARQUEST, providing a three-hour course on Current Probing; Bill Schultz, AAMCO Transmissions, teaching a three-hour course on Electronic Transmission Diagnosis; Grant Wolter, Ford Motor Co., giving a three-hour course on Ford Electronic Chassis and Body Control Systems; and last but not least, a three-hour course on Fuel Injection provided by AC Delco.
CARS will immediately follow AAPEX (Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo), Oct. 31-Nov. 3 at the Sands Convention Center and the Las Vegas Convention Center.
