The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation to require a review of legislation that would place unfunded mandates on the private sector and encourage debate in the Congress on specific mandates.

Vice President Al Gore has unveiled an agenda to combat urban sprawl. Armed with the results of recent elections where several anti-sprawl measures passed, this issue promises to become an important one during the next year.

Gore's "Livability Agenda" outlines several initiatives including funds to reduce traffic congestion and improve public transit. The goal is to encourage development in existing urban areas.

Legislation in Arizona to require vehicle manufacturers to provide the information necessary for independent repairers to access and reprogram on-board diagnostic (OBD) computers has passed the House Committee on Transportation. If enacted, this legislation could help ensure that the independent aftermarket can continue to repair vehicles and continue to compete with new car dealers for repairs.

"This legislation is still evolving through the legislative process. We believe that it could have a tremendous impact on the type of information that independents receive as well as the ease with which they receive it," said ASA Washington, D.C., Representative Bob Redding.
