Around ASA

At an October 1996 meeting, ASA-New Jersey made plans to expand its mechanical division membership. Affiliate board members and staff met with mechanical shop owners to discuss strategies to increase the membership, as well as important issues facing the mechanical industry.
The plan includes launching a membership drive that will allow new members to join the association at a reduced dues rate. Cindy Tursi, ASA-New Jersey executive director, said, "We think we have a lot to offer mechanical shops in the state. We just have to create the opportunities to meet with them and explain the advantages of being a member of our association."
The affiliate has set a goal to increase mechanical division membership by 50 percent by the end of this year.
ASA-Washington named Gini Steffy, AAM, G & S Motors in Lynnwood, the "1996 Outstanding Member of the Year." The award is presented annually to the person who contributed the most during the preceding year to benefit and assist not only ASA, but the automotive industry as a whole. This is the highest honor ASA-Washington bestows on an individual.
As the first woman to receive this award, Steffy joins 28 other leaders who have been honored for their contributions since 1967. The award was given to Steffy by ASA-Washington president Ed Cushman during the affiliate's Semi-Annual Retreat and Management Workshop. The retreat was held Jan. 16-19, in Ocean Shores, Wash., where 140 ASA members and guests spent an informative and fun weekend consisting of business meetings, roundtable discussions, seminars and entertainment.
On behalf of the ASA affiliate and chapter groups, the ASA Calendar of Events is now posted on the Aftermarket On-Line Web Site (http://www.aftmkt.com). The calendar lists not only national events, but local and state activities. ASA is a member of the Aftermarket On-Line Advisory Council, which oversees the site and works to facilitate the orderly development of Internet services in the best interests of aftermarket companies and personnel. If your affiliate or chapter has an activity you would like added to the calendar, please forward the information to ASA by mail, fax (817) 685-0225, or by email at bjf@asashop.org.
1996 Outstanding Member Of The Year
To better serve ASA-California members, a delegate seat was established at the ASA Affiliate Assembly meeting held during the association's Annual Convention. The Affiliate Assembly meeting is the process used by the national association to present issues of national importance for consideration by the national board of directors. With representation at this meeting, California members will have a voice on issues raised at the annual Affiliate Assembly, as well as input in the affairs of ASA.Dale Bright, Dale Bright's Auto Service in Chino, was elected by a vote of California members as the California delegate to the ASA Affiliate Assembly. Bright will be the California delegate for two years, at which time the state membership will select a new delegate for the following two meetings. Bright has been an ASA member since 1976, and has served on the ASA Collision Division Operations Committee for five years. His business is an Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) Gold Class shop and he has served as the I-CAR California state chairman. Bright is also an L-1 Master Certified and Master Auto Body Certified technician.

In an effort to promote the ASA Code of Ethics to consumers, ASA-Pennsylvania has created a unique program. The affiliate has taken the ASA Code of Ethics and enlarged it to an 11-1/4" by 17-1/4" laminated poster. The normal size of the code is 8-1/2" by 11". All affiliate members who make their first dues payment for 1997 receive the poster to display in their waiting areas and front offices. Members can either hang the poster as is or frame it.The idea of increasing the size of the code was thought of after the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) report was published in late 1995. ASA-Pennsylvania wanted to show the motoring public that its members were already adhering to good, professional business practices. By enlarging the code, the affiliate feels it is more visible.
