We Need Managers Too!Posted 4/14/2005By Denise Caspersen The automotive service industry knows all too well the need for qualified service professionals. Oftentimes, we concentrate on the need for qualified technicians. This time, let's look at first-line managers/supervisors of mechanics, installers and repairers. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics compiles data on the number of individuals in specific occupations and then projects the number needed over a 10-year period. In 2002, automotive dealers had 32,444 automotive managers/supervisors. This is projected to grow to 37,278 by 2012. Automotive parts, accessories and tire stores currently have 15,271 automotive managers/supervisors, a number that is projected to grow to 18,474 in 2012. Currently gasoline stations have 3,304 managers/ supervisors, and this is projected to grow to 3,609 in 2012. Currently there are 45,554 managers/supervisors working in automotive repair and maintenance businesses, which includes auto body and specialty shops. By 2012, this number is projected to grow to 53,684. As these statistics show, there is a need for trained automotive service professionals at the management level, in addition to the technician level.
