Maintenance Costs Differ by Region

Posted 4/4/2002
By Denise Caspersen

The latest Consumer Expenditure Survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is out and as you may have guessed, not all repair expenditures are equal.

For example, folks living in the Northeast spend an annual average of $570 on vehicle maintenance and repair while those in the South spend an average of $584 annually. Interestingly, those living in the Western region of the United States spend an average of $749 while people living in the Midwest spend an average of $610 annually.

Vehicle insurance rates also vary by region, according to the survey. The Western region again rates the highest, with an average of $831 spent on vehicle insurance each year. Northeasterners follow close behind, spending an average of $808 annually. Midwesterners shell out an average of $750 per year for vehicle insurance. Those living in the South come in a close fourth by paying an average of $747 annually for vehicle insurance.
