Mechanical Division Subcommittees

ASA's Mechanical Division subcommittees may be established to focus on specific industry issues and/or work with vehicle manufacturers, tool and equipment manufacturers, third party information providers, parts manufacturers and distributors or any other entity that affects the process of providing service and repairs to the motoring public.

Subcommittees may also be appointed to maintain industry relations in the areas of legislation, environment, education or any other area that may affect the automotive service and repair industry.

Mechanical Division Operations Committee members are appointed to serve on subcommittees by the division director and subcommittee chairperson.

Education and Training - Mike Brewster, chair: This subcommittee assists Bill Haas, ASA's vice president of education and training, with ways to market and increase attendance at regional Keep Educating Yourself and Staff (KEYS) events. An ongoing task will be to explore ways to encourage young people to enter the automotive repair and service industry.

Extended Service Plan (ESP) Advisory - Mike Koebke, chair: This subcommittee creates two informal publications that will help consumers and shop owners better understand extended service plans. This subcommittee will also be working towards developing a rating chart for ESP providers.

Information Availability - Robert Ayers, chair: The subcommittee's primary goal is the development of instructional material for accessing and navigating individual OEM Web sites.

Marketing - Rick Baker, chair: This subcommittee works on ways to encourage ASA members to be more proactive in marketing ASA in their business. The subcommittee will offer assistance in developing a recruitment brochure that addresses the "emotional" aspects of ASA membership, while exploring ways to encourage mebers to take pride in being an ASA member.

Parts Quality - Betty Jo Young, chair: This subcommittee was formed in May 2007. It is the goal of the subcommittee to make the industry aware of the parts inconsistencies and to explore possible solutions to let the service provider know "What's in the box today."

Shop Licensing - Bob Wills, chair: The subcommittee's goal is to make ASA the resource for shop licensing information and guidelines.
